Lot Essay

Introduced in 2006, Patek Philippe reference 5396 reinterprets the manufacture's celebrated annual calendar within the timeless aesthetic of the Calatrava. Its elegant round case, inspired by the legendary reference 96 of the 1930s, combines restrained proportions with a contemporary presence, while the warm pink gold case further enhances the model's classical character.

The dial draws inspiration from one of Patek Philippe's most celebrated perpetual calendars, reference 3448, and introduced a distinctive new display to the manufacture's annual calendar collection. For the first time, the patented complication features twin in-line apertures for the day and month beneath 12 o'clock, while the date is displayed in a separate aperture at 6 o'clock. A subsidiary dial incorporates the moon phases together with a 24-hour indication, creating a perfectly balanced and highly legible layout that has become one of the defining characteristics of the reference.

Discontinued in February 2024 after an uninterrupted production run of nearly eighteen years, reference 5396 has become one of Patek Philippe's most enduring and recognisable modern annual calendars, admired for its harmonious proportions, technical sophistication, and understated elegance.
