Created in 2014 as part of the limited-edition collection celebrating Patek Philippe's 175th anniversary, the reference 5975 occupies a distinctive position in the manufacture's history as its first self-winding chronograph-only wristwatch. The model was produced in 400 examples each in yellow, white and pink gold, alongside a particularly exclusive series of 100 platinum examples with black dials.
Reference 5975 is also notable as Patek Philippe's first chronograph without conventional registers or subsidiary seconds, instead presenting its functions through an elaborate multi-scale dial. Three separate scales allow the wearer to perform different measurements: a telemeter for calculating distance, a tachymeter for measuring speed and a pulsometer for determining heart rate. It was the first Patek Philippe chronograph to combine all three functions within a single wristwatch. Despite the considerable amount of information displayed, the dial remains remarkably balanced and elegant, drawing clear inspiration from the manufacture's celebrated multi-scale chronographs of the mid-twentieth century.
At its heart is Patek Philippe's in-house automatic calibre CH 28-520, incorporating an innovative vertical-clutch chronograph system. This construction allows the chronograph to remain continuously engaged without adversely affecting accuracy or causing the additional wear associated with more traditional chronograph mechanisms.
