Introduced in 2000, the Malte Perpetual Calendar Chronograph reference 47112 marked a significant milestone in Vacheron Constantin's modern history as the manufacture's first manually wound perpetual calendar chronograph. The model successfully combined one of watchmaking's most prestigious complications with the refined aesthetics for which the Genevan maison is renowned. Among its most distinctive features is the beautifully engraved moon-phase disc, a design so successful that Vacheron Constantin later adopted it for some of its most celebrated creations, including the 'Tour de l'Île' grand complication and the 'Patrimony Traditionnelle' Perpetual Calendar Chronograph.
Powered by the hand-wound calibre 1141, reference 47112 remained in production until approximately 2006–2007 and was offered exclusively in either platinum or 18K yellow gold, as seen in the present example. The movement is revealed beneath an elegant hinged officer-style caseback incorporating a sapphire crystal, allowing the owner to admire the exceptional hand-finishing while preserving the classical appearance of a solid caseback when closed. Combining technical sophistication, refined proportions, and one of Vacheron Constantin's most elegant modern case designs, the present reference remains among the manufacture's most desirable complicated wristwatches of the early twenty-first century.
