Lot Essay

The Royal Oak is widely regarded as a true icon and one of the most recognisable and influential wristwatch designs ever created. Introduced in 1972 as the first high-end sports watch made of stainless steel, it fundamentally changed the landscape of modern watchmaking. Designed by the legendary Gérald Genta, the Royal Oak is immediately identifiable by its octagonal bezel secured by eight visible screws, a design reportedly inspired by a traditional diver's helmet. With its integrated bracelet, bold geometry and exceptional finishing, the model established an entirely new category of watch, combining sporting character with the craftsmanship of high watchmaking.

The present timepiece represents a considerably more complex and technically ambitious interpretation of this celebrated design, combining a tourbillon with chronograph functionality. Its larger and more substantial case houses a sophisticated double-barrel system, providing an impressive power reserve while ensuring a consistent supply of energy to the tourbillon. Prominently displayed through the dial, the constantly rotating tourbillon provides a spectacular mechanical focal point while demonstrating Audemars Piguet's mastery of traditional high complications. The sapphire crystal caseback further reveals the intricately constructed and beautifully finished movement, offering a striking contrast between the Royal Oak's unmistakable sporting architecture and the sophisticated mechanics within.
