Lot Essay

Few wristwatches have had as profound an impact on modern watchmaking as Audemars Piguet's Royal Oak. Introduced in 1972, it revolutionised the industry by becoming the first serially produced stainless steel wristwatch positioned as a true luxury timepiece, a concept considered remarkably unconventional at the time. Designed by the legendary Gérald Genta, whose creations would go on to shape the identities of some of the world's greatest watch manufactures, the Royal Oak has since become one of the most recognisable and influential wristwatch designs ever produced. Its distinctive octagonal bezel, secured by eight hexagonal screws, was famously inspired by the portholes of traditional diving helmets.

Introduced in 2012, reference 15450ST continued the legacy of reference 15300 as the elegant mid-sized interpretation of the Royal Oak. Measuring 37 mm., it faithfully preserves the model's iconic design language, combining the beautifully finished stainless steel case and integrated bracelet with the signature blue 'Grande Tapisserie' dial. At its heart beats the in-house calibre 3120, offering a power reserve of approximately 60 hours and renowned for its robustness and refined finishing. Now discontinued and succeeded by the reference 15550ST, the 15450ST has become an increasingly sought-after reference among collectors who appreciate its balanced proportions and timeless versatility.
