Lot Essay

The bodhisattva is shown in an animated pose facing to his left clad in a white garment and scarfs. It is likely this came from a scene depicting a group of attendants paying homage to a central figure of a Buddha or bodhisattva.

Compare with a manuscript illustration of a four-armed Manjushri in the Cleveland Museum Of art. (1958.475), both figures wear long trailing white sashes, similar facial types and shading of the body. Also compare with a related fragment of a thangka sold by Bonhams, New York, 19 Match 2013, lot 146.
