The Cartier Tank
The Cartier Tank was conceived by Louis Cartier in 1917, inspired by the overhead silhouette of a Renault tank seen on the Western Front. Its defining architecture—two parallel brancards framing a rectangular case—was a radical departure from the pocket watches and Art Nouveau curves of the era, and it entered production in 1919 in a first series of just six examples. Over a century later, the Tank remains the most enduring expression of Cartier's watchmaking aesthetic, its geometric purity and Roman numeral dial instantly recognizable and continually reinterpreted without ever losing the original's essential character.
