Lot Essay

Daniel Roth
Daniel Roth is among the defining figures of modern independent watchmaking, a master watchmaker who trained in the Vallée de Joux and honed his craft at Audemars Piguet before spending fourteen years at Breguet, where he played a pivotal role in reviving the historic house and reintroducing the classical design codes collectors now associate with the brand. In 1988, he established his own manufacture, becoming one of the earliest pioneers of the modern independent movement.

From the outset, Roth's watches were instantly recognizable: the signature double-ellipse case, a form neither round nor rectangular but something entirely his own, housed hand-finished guilloché dials, blued hands, and complications executed in extremely small numbers. The pre-1995 period is widely regarded as the brand's purest expression, when Roth worked with a small team and produced some of the most remarkable and collectible wristwatches of the era, including the original Asprey-commissioned tourbillons and finely finished chronographs and perpetual calendars.

Production was always limited—often fewer than fifty pieces per reference—and this scarcity, combined with Roth's uncompromising devotion to traditional Swiss craftsmanship, has ensured that early Daniel Roth watches remain fervently sought after by connoisseurs today.
