Lot Essay
Postmarked 20 February 1904, the present work is a richly-worked postcard send by the German Expressionist artist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner to his close friend and, then, fellow architecture student and artist Fritz Bleyl. The following year, Kirchner and Bleyl, alongside their compatriots Erich Heckel and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, founded Die Brücke in what Peter Selz described as "one of the most revolutionary events in the history of modern painting" (German Expressionist Painting, Berkeley, 1974, p. 67).
