The miniature set inside the cover of the box is very detailed and finely painted in a rich palette that resemble the work of the French miniaturist, draughtsman and engraver Jean-Baptiste Massé. A pupil of Jean Jouvenet and Jean-Baptiste de Châtillon, he was received into the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture and became one of the leading miniature painters of the reign of Louis XV. Among his pupils were Jean-Étienne Liotard and Cornelius Høyer.
He held the title of peintre en miniature du roi and executed numerous portrait miniatures for the French court.
Massé is best remembered for his ambitious engraved publication recording the decorations of the Hall of Mirrors and adjacent salons at Versailles, La Grande Galerie de Versailles et les deux Salons qui l'accompagnent, produced between 1723 and 1753 after the paintings of Charles Le Brun.
