MR DARLEY'S ARABIAN AND ITS PROGENY
Henry Darley's bay horse Aleppo was named after the historic Syrian trading city, home of Mr Darley's brother Thomas, British Consul in the city. He was a merchant and a member of the Levant Company, the English chartered company founded in 1592, which traded with the Ottoman Empire and the wider Levant. It was there that Thomas Darley acquired the famed Arabian stallion The Darley Arabian, which became one of the leading sires of early eighteenth century racehorses, alongside the Godolphin Arabian and the Byerley Turk. The Darley Arabian was sire to Aleppo and the Duke of Devonshire's undefeated Flying Childers.
The Ladies' Plate at York Races had a value of £30. It was for five-year-old horses and was run over a single four mile heat. In 1716 the field consisted of ten horses with the Earl of Lonsdale's bay horse Brisk coming in third place, the Earl of Chesterfield's grey horse King's Fisher taking second, and Aleppo securing first place. Mr Darley no doubt acquired this rare set of strawberry dishes with the winnings, the inscription commemorating the event.
