It was in 1907, after having enjoyed the artistic stimulus of the city as a student, that Eileen Gray made the decision to settle in Paris and found the apartment that was to be her principal home for seventy years. Situated on the first floor of an 18th century hôtel particulier at 21 rue Bonaparte, the elegant rooms of this apartment, furnished over the years with a range of works designed by Miss Gray, including pieces conceived originally for the houses she built in the South of France -- E-1027, Tempe à Pailla and Lou Pérou -- and others created specifically for the rue Bonaparte.
The Château de Gourdon Collection featured particularly two pieces designed for her bedroom, a cabinet with pivoting drawers and the multi-function unit that occupied the wall beside and at the head of her bed. Both are characteristic of the new modernist ideas she was exploring in the '20s and '30s and typify her remarkable inventiveness in the harmonious resolution of practical and sculptural concerns.
