Rustem mourns the death of Sohrab, from a Shahnameh, Persian manuscript and gouache heightened with gold on paper, showing Rustem kneeling by the Sohrab's fallen body, two attendants hold horses beside them and numerous soldiers watch from behind the nearby hills, lines of black nasta'liq calligraphy in four columns above and below, green and gold divisions, orange, green and gold margins between black rules, red and blue outer rules, the cream leaf painted with gold clouds, animals and birds, framed and glazed, (occasional small areas of smudging, rubbing and flaking), Shiraz, second half 16th century - 14¼ x 8½in. (36.3 x 21.7cm.)
