SIR WALTER SCOTT (1771-1832)
Autograph letter signed ("Walter Scott") to John Scott of Gala, Gala House, Galashiels, 2 pages, 4to, Edinburgh, 28th December 1819 (some light spotting), with typed transcript and notes on the letter in common double-sided mount, framed and glazed.
The popular discontent in Scotland in 1819 had induced Scott and some of his neighbours to raise a volunteer force in the local districts, to be prepared against a supposed combination of Glasgow artisans and Northumberland colliers. The force was to be called the 'Buccleuch legion,' and Scott was ready to take command.
"... we would be thankfully accepted under the name of Dismounted Yeomanry ... I will endeavour, in case this snowstorm prevent my coming out, to make myself master of the Yeomanry Act so far as relates to appointments and pay ... I wrote a few lines to the Mr. of Napier to let him know what we are about and to enquire whether he will take sincere and aefauld part with us. I would like to see five or six companies on foot, in which case he would naturally fall to be Lieutenant-Colonel. The present Lord Somerville tells me that he means to settle at the Pavilion, and would make an excellent Major. You would have your company - But all this is matter of after consideration." (2)
