Lot Essay
Clearly designed as a poor man's Melba, this model was advertised in May 1908 as the 'Windsor'. A month later, the name had changed to 'Castle'. No explanation was given (Windsor Castle remained in the background of both advertisements). Presumably, 'Windsor' was a compositor's error: Zonophone model names at the time all had the initial letter 'C'. A small transfer on the case gives the American spelling Zon-o-phone, although the company name is given as International Zonophone Company, and the unhyphenated form is normally found in British publicity literature.
