Lot Essay

Some of the early unfluted wood horns have been seen with gilt lines; on this example, advantage has been taken of the lighter-coloured sapwood section of each veneer strip to produce a striated effect on the outside of the horn. On the inside, use of successive layers from the same log has produced decorative rings of knot formations - whether this was deliberate or accidental can only be speculated upon.
