Lot Essay

The square cornered cabriole front legs of these chairs is unique within the English tradition of chairmaking. Both oral and documentary evidence points to its origin as the north-east corner of Lincolnshire, where a flourishing chairmaking tradition existed centred on the town of Spilsby.

See Bernard Cotton The English Regional Chair, Woodbridge, 1990, p.148 onwards for a fuller discussion and figures NE.184 and NE.185 for similar examples.
