John Hanson Walker
Portrait of a young Girl, possibly the Artist's Daughter, Dorothy
signed 'J. Hanson Walker'; oil on canvas
24 x 20in. (61 x 50.7cm.)

Lot Essay

Dorothy Walker, the artist's ninth child, was born on 26 October 1882, and baptized in the Swedenborian Church of New Jerusalem in Palace Gardens Terrace, Kensington. It has been suggested that this picture might be her portrait. (Another portrait can be found in Belinda Morse, John Hanson Walker, p.68, illustrated.) It is possible that she was named after the Hon. Dorothy Hood, daughter of Viscount Hood, a spirited five year old whom the artist had painted earlier in the year, and whose portrait was exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery.

We are grateful to Lady Morse for her help in preparing this entry.
