AN ENGLISH LAQUERED WOOD MODEL OF NAPOLEON'S COLUMN AT BOLOGNA, first quarter 19th century

Decorated to simulate marble, the rectangular plinth inset with marble and mahogany panels, the underside with a hand written indistinct inscription in ink Model of Buonapartes(sic) Pillar at Bologna. The marble in front is a piece of the marble with which it is built. The mahogany sides a piece of the ship....

Lot Essay

The latter part of the inscription to the base, which is now too faded to read, probably refered to the mahogany panels inset to the base of the column, being salvaged from the vessel in which Napoleon was exiled too the island of St Helena.
