A detailed 1:96 scale display model of the S.S. 'Borodino'
built by C. Riches with masts, derricks and rigging, anchors, winch, bollards, rope drums, companionways, hatches, deck winches, wheelhouse with open bridge over with helm, binnacles, telegraphs, awning staunchions, ventilators, stayed funnel with ladder, hooter and safety valve extension pipes, engine room lights, aft superstructure with steering position, four lifeboats in davits and other details. The hull, with four blade propellor and rudder is finished in red, green and white and mounted on two turned columns -- 13½ x 39in. (34.3 x 99cm.). Glazed case with brass plate engraved 'S.S. Lot Essay

The Borodino was built in 1911 by the Earles Shipbuilding and Engineering Co. of Hull, at the shipyard situated on the North Bank of the Humber. Yard No. 579 built for Thomas Wilson Sons & Co. was distinctive as having a 'Cruiser' Stern. Typical for the era, jthe Borodino was suited for use on the Wilson Lines American & Mediterranean trades. Requisitioned in 1914 by the Admiralty for use as a store & laundry ship at Scapa Flow. After the war she had an uneventful career but in 1939 at the outbreak of war, she was again taken over by the Admiralty. On 27 May 1940 she was sunk as a block ship at Zeebrugge.
