Lot Essay

The Fort Stuart was one of the largest three-masters ever built as well as being one of the finest vessels to come out of any Sunderland yard. Designed by Henry Claughton, she was built by the Sunderland Shipbuilding Co. for Stuart & Douglas of Liverpool in 1892. Registered at 2,433 tons and measuring 302 feet in length with a 42 foot beam, she carried many refinements amongst her gear and had especially well-equipped officers' accommodation. Despite the care which went into her, however, she had a very short life and was abandoned at sea in 1899.
