Columbia was built at Gloucester, Mass., in 1891, 124.38 tons gross and her Captain was W.E. Chase. North Star was built at Essex, Mass. in 1890, 130.19 tons gross. Her homeport was Boston, Mass. and she was captained by Lawrence Nye.
