Clarice's commercial orientation to her products meant many pieces had dual functions. This shape was marketed as a Stamford biscuit barrel, a Stamford tea caddy, and (without the lid) as a flower holder! The appliqué pattern range was more expensive than 'Bizarre' or 'Fantasque' and primarily issued as art pottery but domestic pieces were produced in limited quantities. This is only the second example known of an Appliqué pattern on this shape, Christie's previously sold one in 'Palermo'.
