Literature
The gilt monogram on the central part of the porcelain incorporates the initials C.T., which stand for Carl Theodore, Elector of Palatinate (1742-1799), (Palatinate is a name which was generally given to any district ruled by a count Palatine, but in this case refers to a district of Germany, a province of the Republic of Bavaria lying to the west of the Rhine). The Frankenthal porcelain factory was located in the town of Frankethal from 1755-1795 approximately 6 miles from Schloss Oggersheim; it was moved to Grunstadt in 1795. Carl Theodor had a number of residences the most important of which were Mannheim and Schwetzingen; the elector also purchased Schloss Oggersheim in 1972. Porcelain is frequently referred to as part of the collections maintained at Schloss Oggersheim, for example in the anti-chamber of Carl Theodor, 'zwei Leuchtertische ebenso wie die dazuhorigen Leuchter volgoldet und mit roten Einfassngen belebt,' Karl Lochner, Schloss und Garten Oggersheim, Speyer, 1960, p. 73; he also refers to a cabinet, 'das auf Weiss, blau, gold abgestimmt war,' op.cit. p.72. The electors wife Elizabeth August removed quantities of furniture and objects from then Schloss Oggersheim in 1793, fortuitously since it was burned down by French revolutionary troops in 1794. Pieces from Oggersheim are now kept in Mannheim, Neuberg and Munich (op.cit. p.89).
