signed Canivet à La Sphére à Paris 1770, the engraved protractor scale divided 0°-180°/180°-0°, with two fixed sights, the frame with pierced scroll and engraved decoration, the alidade with twin sights and vernier scales, the compass box with silvered dial divided into four quadrants, with steel needle, on ball and socket joint with staff mounting and ebonised stand -- 12 3/8in. (31.4cm.) high
