Viverrids are to carnivores what lemurs are to the higher primates. Civets in particular are modern apprximations of carnivores' common ancestral stock. The predominantly arboreal genets have soft fur, retractile claws, a spotted or blotched coat pattern and may be the precursors of cats. Civets are almostwholly terrestrial; they are larger, coarse-furred animals, with blunt claws fixed in short, dog-like pads.
