Lot Essay

Cooper is renowned for his portrait of Churchill entitled: "Profile for Victory," which he painted for the Carlton Club in 1942. It was exhibited the following year at the R.A. (No. 302). As this pastel is also a profile portrait and of a similar date, it has been suggested that it was a preliminary drawing for "Profile for Victory." Profile portraits of Churchill are uncommon.
