Provenance
Miss Weston who inherited the stomacher from her great grandmother who is thought to have acquired it in 1688. Miss Weston was a descendant of Chevalier John d'Este, brother of Queen Mary Beatrice of Modena. Bequeathed by Miss Weston to Sophia Margaret Penn in 1764, a relation of Miss Weston and granddaughter of William Penn of Pennsylvania and wife of the most Rev. and Hon. William Stuart, Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland. By descent to the vendor

Lot Essay

wrapped in blue sugar paper inscribed in early 18th century hand "Stomacher and sleeves belonging to Queen Mary"
The Wedding Suit of James, Duke of York later King James II, 1673, now in the Victoria and Albert Museum is also embroidered in gold and silver with honeysuckle. This stomacher may even have been worn on her wedding day.
