Lot Essay

Two youths, holding large curved bats, put money into a hat in support of a widow and her little son. All the fashionably-dressed children surrounding the woman have stopped their games in order to relieve her poverty. The boy with the hat also holds the fallen soldier's sword, and there is an implicit suggestion that the youth who can play cricket will grow up to win battles. The accompanying verse emphasises the pleasures of benevolence:
"From their lov'd sports, the generous Youth repose
Round the brave Soldier's Widow sunk in grief,
And taste a dearer joy, than sport bestows,
To give her weary wretchedness relief."
Some spotting to left of image but otherwise A FINE IMPRESSION IN GOOD CONDITION.
