Lot Essay
The 1888 match was famously won by Australia after four innings totalling only 291 -- top score was W. G. Grace's 24, while Ferris took 10 for 63. In June 1896, Australia were out for 53 in the first innings and, though they still lost by 6 wickets, they fought back with 347 in the second, Trott and Gregory both scoring centuries (see lots 76 and 77). The following August England won by 66 runs; Australia were dismissed for 44 in their second innings, the first nine wickets falling for just 25 runs. On the same ground in 1934, the tables were turned by Ponsford and Bradman when they scored respective double centuries of 266 and 244, enabling Australia to establish a first innings total of 701 runs; Grimmett took 5 for 64 in England's second innings and Australia won the match by 562 runs.
