Lot Essay

This miniature limited edition bronze of Perry, numbered 1 of 6, is an exact replica of the full-size sculpture in the grounds of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club at Wimbledon. Positioned opposite the entrance to the Members' Enclosure, this was unveiled in 1984 by His Royal Highness the Duke of Kent to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the first of Perry's three victories in the Gentlemen's Singles Championship. At the same time, the gates at the Somerset Road entrance to the ground were renamed after the tennis star. Perry himself said: "The occasion meant more to me than all the prize money in the world."
