A remarkable and unusual geographer's mahogany map cabinet, with four hand coloured engraved wall maps of Europe, Asia, Africa and America, each map coloured in outline, some boundaries, nation states variously coloured with boundaries known at the time, the map of Europe with additional table showing references to the states forming the Germanic Confederation, including the Austrian Empire, the Kingdom of Prussia, Bavaria, Saxony, Hannover, Wurtemburger and the Electoral House of Hesse, and other Duchy's and Principalities; the map of Asia similarly coloured and showing additional information such as the "Route of the Indian Caravans" across the Nedjed Desert, the "Chinese Wall" also shown, and various routes and tracks of ancient explorers shown; the map of Africa showing "the habitable parts occupied by nomadic or wandering tribes, the mountains of the moon, extensive information given, showing sites of wells and oases, the centre of Africa inscribed JAGAS and other TRIBES of whom very little is known; the Americas marked with areas for the indian tribes and routes of discoverers and adventurers in South America, with comments on battles and other events, the South Pacific and Pacific Ocean showing geographical information known at the time, the Sandwich Isles with additional information such as at Woahoo Lieut. Hergest Commander of the Doedulus, Mr. Gooch the astronomer and one of the seamen were murdered by the natives; each map backed on canvas, mounted on a sprung roller, with brass ring-pulls and ring-pull catches and release mechanism, contained in a mahogany wall mounted cabinet with decorative side pillars and moulded plinth top -- 83in.
