A 20-inch (51cm.) diameter library celestial globe, made up of twenty-four paper gores, engraved and coloured, the constellations represented by mythical beasts, figures and scientific instruments, stars shown by magnitude (old surface abrasions, some minor cracks and paper loss, varnish crackled), with engraved lacquered-brass meridian circle, north and south polar hour circles, with contemporary horizon ring, mounted on an oak stand, the turned and fluted tapering legs united with the central globe pillar by three cabriole supports, with compass signed Newton & Sons, Chancery Lane, London, united with the legs by bobbin-turned stretchers, the stand with brass feet and castors, overall height -- 45in.
