Lot Essay

Shepard contributed his first Punch cartoon in 1907 which heralded the beginning of many years of partnership. The Shepard biography by Rawle Knox states that "His last political cartoon, on the Austrian peace treaty, appeared in September '52, though he did contribute a special one, for a World Churches' appeal, in the December of the following year." This head-piece seems to be undocumented by Shepard's biographers and appears to be unique in its combination of A. A. Milne and Kenneth Grahame characters.
