Lot Essay

Life in London provided inspiration for Ardizzone's earlier work and hand in hand with the city came the representation of the "Pub". This integral part of London life was a meeting place for local life that allowed Ardizzone to observe and depict emotional and psychological situations. In these free and uninhibited surroundings, he extracted a world of his own and carefully depicted contemporary life without judgement or satire. The "Pub" remained a theme in his work throughout his life.
