A tortoiseshell oval snuff box
the cover inset with a chased and pierced badge depicting King Charles I, in profile within a surround of legends and a wreath, the box 18th/19th century, the medallion, 17th century -- 9cm. high.

Such badges appeared shortly after the execution of the King in 1649 and were worn, surreptitiously, during the years of the Commonwealth by those loyal to his cause and by supporters of the monarchical system in general (i.e. those who believed passionately in the notion of the Divine Right of Kings).
