Lot Essay

Robert Howlett received a commission to document the construction of the "Great Eastern" in November, 1857, from the Illustrated Times who included nine engravings after the photographs in a special issue of the magazine published on 16th January, 1858. In the absence of any dock or slip large enough to take her, the "Great Eastern" had been built sideways along the Thames foreshore, and Howlett's photographic record was taken at the critical juncture when gigantic chains had been brought in to help with her launch.
