Forty-one (of forty-two) albumen print cabinet cards, thirty-seven hand-painted, the majority with printed credit of Owen Angel, High Street Exeter, inserted back-to-back in pre-cut mounts with gilt borders, sitters and their costume roles identified in ink on mounts, brown morocco, gilt, the front cover in gilt-metal with raised border of powder blue enamel, applied gilt -metal monogram E H F within central oval of blue enamel, g.e., 4to.

Lot Essay

A fine album of hand-painted child portraits, the exquisitely dressed young children shown in elegant studio and mock seaside or rural settings with elaborate props relating to their chosen characters. Probably compiled by the Follett family of Devon, whose three children, Henry Spencer, Harriet Laura and Marian Eleanor appear at the beginning. Other families represented include Barnes, Baker, Benson, Buckingham, Cotton, Howard, Drake, D'Urban (illus.), Ellis, Harding, Hardy, Head, Lewis, Northcote, Lloyd, Milford, Porter, Richards, Roper, Snow, Sim, Tozer and West.
