A 19th-Century lacquered and oxidised-brass theodolite,
signed on the horizontal plate W & S JONES, 30 Holborn, London, the telescope with rack and pinion focusing, located on the limb by two supports over the vertical half-circle, engraved with a vernier and adjusted by rack and pinion gear, the horizontal plate with compass box, the compass with silvered dial, finely engraved circle divided in four quadrants, the edge-bar needle with jewelled cap, with level and cross bubble over the horizontal silvered scale, raised on a tripod mounting with three adjustable screw feet, the telescope -- 14½in. (36.8cm.) long
