A German Stonebow (Schnepper)
Early 17th Century
Of characteristic form, with slender steel bow, later strings, two fore-sight pillars, built-in gaffle held by a spring-catch at the rear and stamped with a maker's mark, a stag passant, iron trigger-guard of circular section partly bound with cord and retaining two original pom-poms, button-set trigger, and fruitwood butt with stamped decoration, iron button, and inlaid oval white staghorn medallion in the cheek-piece (back-sight missing)
