A Very Rare 16-Bore Bossi Pattern Two-Shot Superimposed Load Wheel-Lock Carbine
Circa 1630-40
With two-stage smooth-bore barrel fitted with fore-sight and back-sight and struck with a mark on the left side of the octagonal breech section, plain bevelled lock retained by three screws, and struck with a mark, a lion rampant, on the tail, stained walnut full stock (cracked and lightly wormed), the butt with cavity for balls, plain iron mounts including long saddle bar with ring on the left side, and later ramrod

Giuliano Bossi of Rome wrote a treatise on superimposed load charges in 1625 entitled 'Breve Trattato d'Alcune Inventioni'. A gun similar to the present example is signed 'Julianus Bossius Inventor 1631 Ad Destructionem Infidelium in Bello' ('Guiliano Bossi Inventor 1631, for the Destruction of Infidels in War')
