An Italian polychrome carved wood chess set
depicting crusaders versus saracens, possibly by the Anri factory, the royal pieces, bishops and pawns of bust type, with painted features, royal pieces crowned and turbanned respectively, the bishops with mitres and turbans respectively, knights with horses' heads, rooks as castelated turrets, pawns helmeted and turbanned respectively, all pieces with shields to the tapering plinths with gilt white metal mounts to the bases, in a fitted case with the retailers mark of N.Bloom & Son London, kings -- 4in. (10cm.), pawns -- 2¾in. (7cm.)
