A Bolzano softwood King Arthur chess set, by the Anri factory, 20th century
decorated in polychrome, silvered and gilt, the pieces potraying knights and figures of the court, one side predominantly dark hues, the other light hues, the kings standing, crowned and cuirassed, and holding long swords, the queens crowned and veiled, standing robed, the bishops with hands clasped in prayer, the knights cuirassed astride rearing steeds, the rooks as towers, pawns as foot soldiers, king -- 7 7/8in. (20cm) high, pawn -- 4¾in. (12cm) high
