Lot Essay

The source for the figures was the Wehrgeschichtiches Museum near Rastatt in Southern Germany. It was known that a large packing case contained the diorama of a famous victory by Frederick the Great's Prussian troops over the Austrians, but there were no instructions on how to set it up. After two years of meticulous research, the moment represented isolates events at 4 o'clock that afternoon, when the defeat of the Austrians became inevitable and Frederick himself, mounted on a grey, surveys the field in anticipation of triumph. The exact positioning of the troops took three weeks.
