A SET OF GEM-SET JEWELLERY, BY VAN CLEEF & ARPELS

The sautoir of two-coloured rope-textured gold links with alternating cabochon ruby and emerald collets suspending a pendant set with an ancient gold coin enhanced by surrounding circular-cut diamonds and a semi-circular two-row panel set with graduated circular cabochon emeralds and rubies, with a pavé-set diamond surmount, and a pair of earclips set with different ancient gold coins en suite, With French assay marks, chain only, 81.0cm.

Cf. Guide to the principal coins of the Greeks, based on the work of Barclay V. Head, British Museum, page 49, plate 27, illustrations 1 and 2, the coin in the necklace is a Babylonian double daric with the kneeling figure of a king holding a bow, quiver and spear, and monogram of E, the reverse is incused. The coins in the earrrings are from the period of Alexander the Great and show the head of Athena wearing a helmet decorated with a sphinx, the reverse shows Nike holding a wreath and trophy stand, with Greek alphabets.
