cover 1896 (15 May) envelope (light creases) registered to Argentina, showing a very fine strike of the square "HAINAN/LAND POST/SAMAH" in reddish brown dated in manuscript "15.5.96" and the circular "HAI/SAMAH/NAN", the cover travelled to Hoihow where 1891 10c. purple on red pair and 1891 20c. on 30c. surcharged with Chinese characters were applied and neatly cancelled by "HOIHOW" thimble c.d.s. (21.5), showing "R" in circle, New York Exchange registration label (partly applied over one 10c.) and, on reverse, Hong Kong (23.5), San Francisco (28.6) and New York (3.7) transit d.s. A magnificent cover believed to be one of two known registered. Photo in colour
