A FINE BLUE AND WHITE MOON FLASK
QIANLONG SEAL MARK AND OF THE PERIOD

Well painted around the flattened circular body with a broad band of scrolling lotus, between a band of pendent ruyi-heads around the shoulder and a lappet border encircling the base, the slightly waisted neck decorated with upright leaves and flanked by a pair of archaistic dragon handles, all within a wave border encircling the lipped rim and repeated around the foot

Lot Essay

Previously sold in Hong Kong, 17 May 1988, lot 183.

This shape is derived from an early Ming prototype usually painted with dragons. It is very rare to find a Qianlong-marked moon flask of this form painted with a lotus scroll. Compare with the flask painted with a variegated floral scroll within similar borders illustrated in Chinese Porcelain, The S. C. Ko. Tianminlou Collection, pl. 65; and other examples in these Rooms, 19 January 1988, lot 319 and 1 October 1991, lot 958.
