Lot Essay

Recumbent horses are often carved in non-feasible positions in the early to mid Ming period.

A celadon jade horse dated to the mid-Ming dynasty with head turned sharply back over a raised foreleg, illustrated in Zhongguo Yuqi Quanji, vol. 5, no. 144, is similar to the present lot.
