Lot Essay

Wu Hung op.cit. commenting on this piece notes the creation of a "continuous complex movement" and reflects that the carving "is the jade crafsman's response to the challenge posed by the pebble to reveal the natural beauty of jade and to transform the hard stone into a visual form with a dynamic rhythm and extraordinary delicacy".

A similar pendant with three intertwined kui dragons in the collection of Dr and Mrs Marvin Gordon is illustrated in Magic, Art and Order, Jade in Chinese Culture,no. 147.
