May 2, envelope, A178, folded inside-out and sent from London to Penzance, showing superb strike of the red 'tombstone' "C/PAID/2 MY 2/1840" and very faint "Strand B/1D.PAID", ink manuscript "Pd." at top and on one of the interior flaps the pencil inscription "Sent to show Mrs. Day how certain Islanders propose to use the stamps in order that their letters may go free. May 1"; minor creasing and a few imperfections but fine and attractive. An extremely rare and most unusual usage. Photo
